Who’s steering the WBSS ship?

Mambo! The World Boxing Super Series (WBSS) is run by Comosa AG, a boxing promoters crew based in Zurich, Switzerland. Founded in 2017 by Richard Schaefer and Sauerland Promotions, they set out to bring top-tier pro boxing events—think the scale of other major sport tournaments—to boxing. Andreas Benz now calls the shots as CEO, backed by a tight-knit team of seven. Folks sometimes mix the WBSS up with the old World Series of Boxing, which ran amateur bouts from 2010 to 2018 before folding due to losses. Poa?

Getting in & the mega purse

Entry is by invitation: reigning champions and top-15 contenders from the IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO get picked, plus a few back-ups on standby if someone pulls out. The names drop at a fancy gala where seeded fighters choose their quarter-final opponents from a pot of unseeded boxers—fair and square, Kenyan-style luck and all.

There are two brackets of eight—grouped by weight—and it’s straight knockout from there. The champ in each bracket grabs the Muhammad Ali Trophy and a cool KSh 1,000,000,000 prize (approximately, based on a conversion rate of 0.0077). The total purse? A whopping KSh 5,000,000,000. That’s serious prize money, rivaling even the football [EPL prize money] or uefa prize money you hear about.

The WBSS journey so far

Although it kicked off just in 2017, the WBSS has already served up memorable showdowns you’ll find in every boxing newsfeed.

In the inaugural 2017/18 season, they ran super middleweight (up to 168 lb/76.2 kg) and cruiserweight (up to 200 lb/90.7 kg). On 21/07/2018 in Olimpiyskiy, Moscow, Ukraine’s Oleksandr Usyk edged out Russia’s Murat Gassiev by unanimous decision after 12 rounds. Then over in Jeddah on 28/09/2018, the UK’s Callum Smith KO’d George Groves in Round 7 to lift the super middleweight crown. Shwari!

Season 2 recap

The 2018/19 season expanded to three classes:

  • Bantamweight (118 lb/53.5 kg): Japan’s Naoya Inoue beat Nonito Donaire (Philippines) by unanimous decision on 07/11/2019 at the Saitama Super Arena, Japan.
  • Super lightweight (140 lb/63.5 kg): UK’s Josh Taylor got a majority decision over USA’s Regis Prograis at The O2 Arena, London on 26/10/2019.
  • Cruiserweight (200 lb/90.7 kg): Latvia’s Mairis Briedis bested Cuba’s Yuniel Dorticos by majority decision on 26/09/2020 at the Plazamedia Broadcasting Center, Munich.

Why WBSS packs arenas & screens

Sasa, here’s the deal: fans in Kenya already love betting on sports—football (soccer), especially the English Premier League, is massive—plus lotteries. Slots and virtual sports are also on the rise. WBSS taps into that buzz by featuring big names, slick production from veteran promoters like Schaefer & Benz, and a huge purse that pulls in sponsors and broadcasters globally. Mobile betting is king in Kenya thanks to high mobile penetration – you and your friends are probably staking with M-Pesa or Airtel Money more than credit cards these days.

Betting buzz: Why you’ll love wagering on WBSS

Got an account with your favourite online betting sites in Kenya? With your wsb login sorted, you’ll find loads of markets:

  • Moneyline bet on the outright winner—perfect if you’re just starting out with odds betting.
  • Method of winning (KO, points, etc.) or round bets—to spice things up with bigger returns.
  • Season-long accumulators—you could win big with a small stake if you nail the entire bracket.

Like many Kenyan bettors who chase football thrills, you’ll love the drama of boxing. And if you fancy mixing it up, try slot jackpots or odd betting on virtual sports between bouts.
